Bronson Xerri’s opportunity to return to the Bulldogs’ first-grade side was partly triggered by Stephen Crichton’s injury, but uncertainty looms over Xerri’s future at the club. Originally left out of the Bulldogs’ starting team after Round 1, Xerri was given a chance after being called up from the NSW Cup to sit on the bench for the Good Friday match against South Sydney. However, despite Crichton’s injury during the game, Xerri did not make it onto the field.

Now, with Crichton sidelined due to a shoulder injury, Xerri has a crucial window of four weeks to demonstrate his worthiness for a permanent spot in the team. Recurring assessments will track Crichton’s recovery, yet coach Cameron Ciraldo remains optimistic about his return for the State of Origin opener on May 27. Ciraldo noted Crichton has been progressing well, stating, “I think he’ll be ready for Origin.”

Despite a challenging start to the season, Ciraldo has acknowledged the positive attitude and significant effort Xerri has shown following feedback regarding his performance. Known for requesting a release after being dropped, Xerri has reevaluated his approach and committed to intensive training, which Ciraldo has praised.

Ciraldo remarked on Xerri’s determination and work ethic, noting, “The way he’s training, the way he’s preparing… those are the signs we’re looking for.” He refrained from speculating about Xerri’s long-term future at the Bulldogs, emphasising the importance of focusing on upcoming opportunities rather than thinking beyond the immediate future.

Xerri seems eager to seize his chance amidst current uncertainties, especially as he enjoys playing alongside his teammates and has shown resilience following a difficult period in his career. While his time in first grade hangs in the balance, both he and Ciraldo appear ready to tackle the challenges ahead.
