In a dramatic incident during an MLB game on Wednesday (AEST), Atlanta Braves pitcher Reynaldo Lopez and Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Jorge Soler were ejected following a brawl that broke out in the bottom of the fifth inning. The confrontation was sparked when Lopez threw a high pitch that grazed Jonah Heim’s glove, prompting Soler to charge the mound.

Initially, Lopez raised his hands in a gesture of non-aggression, but the atmosphere quickly escalated as both players began trading punches. The brawl soon led to both teams emptying their benches, with teammates rushing in to separate the two combatants. Among those attempting to break up the scuffle was Braves manager Walt Weiss, who was seen tackling Soler.

During the altercation, Lopez managed to land a punch on Soler’s batting helmet while still holding the baseball. The intensity of the situation was amplified by the fact that earlier in the game, Soler had hit a home run off Lopez in his first at-bat, but was subsequently hit by a pitch during his second appearance.

At the time of the incident, the Braves held a narrow 4-2 lead. Lopez’s performance before the brawl included 4⅔ innings pitched, allowing just two runs on three hits while recording seven strikeouts. In contrast, Soler finished the game with a notable statline, boasting a home run and two RBIs.

The Angels had previously secured a 7-2 victory on Monday in the series opener. While the immediate fighting had subsided, questions remain regarding any further disciplinary actions for both players, with suspensions and fines expected as a likely outcome following the incident.
