Zac Lomax’s transition to the Parramatta Eels has been met with mixed results, particularly regarding his role in the team. The 25-year-old centre, who previously played for the Dragons, had an impressive season last year, showcasing his talents when moved to the wing by coach Shane Flanagan. After leaving the Dragons during the off-season, Lomax expressed a strong desire to play in the centres, his preferred position.

In the Eels’ first match of the season, a heavy defeat to Melbourne, Lomax started as a centre but was soon shuffled between the wing and centre roles during their match against the Tigers. This reshuffling is believed to have been implemented to support debutant Jordan Samrani, adding to the uncertainty surrounding Lomax’s best position.

Cooper Cronk, a celebrated player and commentator, highlighted some defensive issues Lomax faced, especially against the formidable Melbourne side, questioning the tactical choices impacting the backline. He noted Lomax’s efforts to master centre defence over the past few months, emphasising his intent to excel in this role. Cronk remarked on the odd decision-making of placing Lomax in different positions during crucial game moments, which might not have aligned with his aggressive pursuit of centre dominance.

Despite an underwhelming start to the season for the Eels, hampered by injuries and player availability, there is hope for Lomax. With star winger Josh Addo-Carr returning from suspension this weekend, it’s anticipated that Lomax will have a full opportunity to showcase his skills at centre. The need for stability and clarity in position is paramount for Lomax as he aims to solidify his role within the team and make a lasting impact.

As the season progresses, the Eels will need to find a balance that allows Lomax to thrive while contributing effectively to the team’s overall strategy.
