Two-time NRL premiership-winning coach Michael Maguire, now 52, reveals he brushes off criticism surrounding his training methods, which some claim push players to their limits. With notable achievements including NRL titles with the Rabbitohs (2014) and Broncos (2025), as well as a Pacific Championship with New Zealand and a State of Origin series with NSW, Maguire remains steadfast in his coaching philosophy despite ongoing scrutiny.

Early in the current season, following the Broncos’ loss at the World Club Challenge and their subsequent defeats in the first two NRL matches, Maguire faced increased criticism. The departure of star prop Payne Haas to South Sydney also drew negative attention towards him. In a recent appearance on Nine’s 100% Footy, he explained his perspective on the criticism: “I actually laugh about it, to be honest,” he said, indicating that he finds amusement in the unfounded criticisms.

Maguire noted that many successful teams speak about the intensity of their training, underscoring no significant difference in what the Broncos are doing. He feels confident, bolstered by a dedicated group of players who appreciate their training and efforts, rendering external opinions less impactful. He expressed gratitude for the support from the Broncos’ fans, highlighting that their acknowledgment of the players’ efforts is what truly matters.

Having been in the coaching profession for quite some time, Maguire is accustomed to the external noise that comes with the territory. He acknowledged the unique and often chaotic nature of rugby league, stating, “That’s our game, it’s what makes it special and pretty crazy at times.” Expressing pride in his current squad, Maguire emphasized the importance of their training dedication. He pointed out that the team’s application in training reassures him of their potential for success.

Maguire achieved a significant milestone last year by leading the Broncos to their first NRL premiership since 2006 in his first season at the helm. However, he continues to navigate constant media scrutiny, particularly from former player Gorden Tallis, who has expressed concerns about Maguire’s position, given his close friendship with former coach Kevin Walters.

Despite the distractions, Maguire takes solace in the appreciation he receives from his squad for their training and efforts. His focus remains on the present, with the Broncos currently on a winning streak and preparing for their next challenge against the Cowboys, where they aim to extend their success.
