In New South Wales, police have successfully confiscated over 91 knives from 67 individuals in the short time since the implementation of new “wanding” laws in December. These laws authorise law enforcement to utilise handheld scanners to search for knives in public spaces such as train stations, shopping centres, sporting events, and nightlife areas.

Since the introduction of these measures, authorities have conducted searches on 4,147 people. Through a series of operations across the state, they have also seized a variety of other illegal weapons, including tasers, slingshots, knuckle dusters, and machetes, resulting in 67 individuals being charged with a total of 71 different offences.

NSW Premier Chris Minns expressed dismay at the alarming number of weapons taken off the streets, stating, “To have removed almost 100 knives and other weapons from our community is as horrifying as it is crucial.” He reinforced the effectiveness of the state’s stringent knife laws in enhancing public safety.

The deputy police commissioner, Peter Thurtell, emphasised the limited circumstances under which carrying a knife in public is justified. He warned that possession of a knife without a reasonable excuse could lead to significant penalties, including a maximum fine of $11,000 or four years imprisonment. Additionally, recent legislative changes have made it illegal to sell knives to anyone under 18 years of age.

Overall, the rapid response of the NSW Police highlights a proactive approach to reducing violence and maintaining safety in communities throughout the state.
