Australia’s south-east is experiencing an early taste of winter this week, characterised by storms and a significant cold front. Melbourne is set for a week filled with grey skies and rain, with temperatures dropping sharply from 27 degrees on Thursday to just 17 degrees over the weekend. Night-time temperatures will dip to around 10 degrees.

Further south, Canberra anticipates chilling lows of only two degrees on Sunday and Monday, while Adelaide expects similar weekend lows of about 9 degrees and Hobart is forecasted to see temperatures fall to 7 degrees.

According to Weatherzone, a trough will sweep across the south-eastern states from Thursday, bringing severe thunderstorms, particularly to southern South Australia, Victoria, and southern New South Wales. These storms are likely to produce strong wind gusts, with some areas potentially experiencing damaging winds. Gusts over 80 km/h are expected in elevated regions, intensifying to between 90 and 100 km/h in alpine and mountainous areas.

As the cold front moves through on Thursday, a drastic decrease in temperatures is expected, prompting wintry conditions to set in. Snowfall may occur in Tasmania at elevations as low as 600 metres and in parts of Victoria above 1,000 metres. Additionally, cold air thunderstorms featuring small hail could signify an early wintry outbreak in April across the region.
