Outdoor education providers in Australia are facing severe challenges as soaring fuel prices threaten the sustainability of their services. Many schools are compelled to cancel trips due to the increased costs of transport, severely impacting these educational experiences for students. Lori Modde, chair of the Outdoor Council of Australia, highlighted the rising frequency of cancellations, attributing the issue to inflated transport costs that have reached up to 25% in some cases.

Andrew Knight, CEO of Outdoors Victoria, noted that additional surcharges on essential services, including gas and food delivery, further exacerbate the situation. A dramatic rise in fuel costs has been reported by several providers, with one managing director witnessing their weekly fuel expenses skyrocket from $3,000 to $10,000. Many businesses are bound by contracts set months in advance, restricting their ability to adjust prices without risking client relationships. As a consequence, they are currently absorbing excess costs in the hope that fuel prices will stabilise soon.

Gemima Weiler, CEO of Bindaree Outdoor Education, expressed concern about the financial strain imposed on schools if service providers are forced to raise fees. She pointed out the paradoxical dilemma facing these providers: either they absorb significant increases, risking profitability, or they pass costs onto schools, potentially jeopardising future bookings. Weiler emphasised that cancelling camps would have a detrimental impact on children, particularly those from lower socio-economic backgrounds who benefit greatly from these experiences.

The outdoor education sector is calling for urgent support from government officials to include their needs in policy considerations, especially in the context of potential fuel rationing. Knight stressed the necessity for schools to have the ability to transport students to camps without disruptions. The overarching message from the sector is clear: outdoor education is vital not only for the development of resilient, confident young individuals but also for fostering healthy communities.

As the industry grapples with these unprecedented challenges, it is crucial that decision-makers at all levels of government take heed of the urgent calls for assistance to ensure these valuable educational experiences continue for future generations.
