The Rioli family has been a prominent name in Aussie Rules football for many years. During a match on Easter Saturday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, it was Maurice Rioli Jr. who thrilled the crowd with an extraordinary mark that could well be a contender for mark of the year. The son of the late 1982 Norm Smith medallist Maurice Rioli Sr. and a first cousin to four-time premiership player Cyril Rioli, Maurice Jr. showcased his athleticism during Richmond’s game against Port Adelaide.

In a spectacular moment, Rioli Jr. soared over Port’s Logan Evans, managing to catch the ball despite it striking him in the forehead first. His quick reflexes and strong grip allowed him to haul in the tricky catch before scoring a goal, much to the delight of Richmond’s fans.

Commentator Gerard Healy praised the feat, describing it as “a ripper” on Fox Footy. He noted the impressive nature of Rioli’s jump and skill, saying, “Put a saddle on him, he jumped up high… it was everything.”

However, the excitement of Rioli’s play contrasted sharply with the overall outcome for the Tigers, as they suffered a disappointing 42-point defeat to the Power, ending with a score of 13.12 (90) to 6.12 (48). This loss continued a challenging season for the rebuilding Richmond side, which remains without a win after facing Carlton, Gold Coast, Fremantle, and Port Adelaide.
