Andrew Johns has urged rugby league players to adapt their tackling styles following Trent Loiero’s recent penalty during the Melbourne versus Penrith clash. The incident occurred when Dylan Edwards attempted to advance through the centre and was brought down by Loiero, who executed a low tackle. Unfortunately, Loiero’s lower body swung and struck Edwards’ leg, leading him to fall injured.
In the replay, the tackle resembled a hip-drop technique, prompting officials to put Loiero on report. During a commentary session with Billy Slater and Johnathan Thurston, Johns voiced his concerns about the frequency of such incidents, questioning why they persist in the game.
Both Slater and Thurston, who both played in backline positions, acknowledged their lack of experience in making middle tackles and were unable to provide a definitive answer. Thurston lamented the situation, stating, “It’s unfortunate; we definitely need to eliminate it from the game and improve tackling techniques.”
Continuing his critique, Johns expressed exasperation, demanding that players change their techniques to prevent further injuries. The hip-drop tackle has received significant attention in recent seasons, particularly as the pace of the game continues to increase. This year alone, Ryan Couchman received a four-match suspension for a tackle that resulted in J’maine Hopgood being sidelined for the rest of the season. Mitch Kenny also faced a one-game suspension after his tackle led to an injury for Isaiah Iongi.
In light of these incidents, Panthers coach Ivan Cleary discussed the evolving interpretation of hip-drop tackles, noting, “What used to be considered a hip-drop is now classified as dangerous contact.” He argued that this shift reflects the need for stricter regulation, pointing out that it is fair consequence when a player suffers an injury due to another’s actions.
The conversation surrounding what constitutes a dangerous tackle continues to be a contentious issue within the league, with former players and commentators calling for improved techniques and safety measures to protect players on the field.
