In a recent podcast with Ford CEO Jim Farley, Australian F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo shared his feelings about being dismissed from his racing career, saying he feels “grateful” for it. The 36-year-old has largely remained out of the spotlight since his last race at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix and reflects on a period of contemplation about his future in the sport prior to his departure.
Ricciardo was sacked by McLaren at the end of 2022 and, after a six-month hiatus, found a spot with the Racing Bulls team — stepping in for the struggling Nyck de Vries for the Hungarian Grand Prix. However, his comeback faced an unfortunate incident where he crashed during practice at Zandvoort, breaking his hand and missing the next six races. During this time, he contemplated whether it was a sign to retire, but felt he had unfinished business in F1 and pushed through the setback.
He acknowledged the emotional toll of being let go from two teams in quick succession, revealing how exhausting the experience was. Ricciardo expressed gratitude that the decision to end his career in F1 was taken out of his hands, recognising that making such a choice himself would have been challenging. He reflected on how he felt worn down and admitted that he had lost some of his competitive edge.
After leaving Red Bull at the end of 2018, Ricciardo faced challenges during his time with Renault and McLaren, with his final year overshadowed by difficulties under the new ground effects aero regulations. The highlight of his tenure with McLaren was winning the 2021 Italian Grand Prix alongside teammate Lando Norris. Although he aspired to perform at a high level, he acknowledged that it became increasingly difficult for him.
Ricciardo has since distanced himself from F1, stating he has no desire to return. He spoke candidly about the importance of self-honesty in making decisions about his future and the need to acknowledge his own experiences, irrespective of the opinions of others. As he closed the chapter on his racing career, he took time to reflect and find peace with his journey.
Now, he serves as a global ambassador for Ford Racing, having rekindled connections with fellow driver Max Verstappen and involved himself with his fashion brand, Enchante. Ricciardo’s openness about his career’s ups and downs embodies a journey of resilience and self-discovery.
