Cameron Smith labelled Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo’s decision to replace injured captain Stephen Crichton with Sean O’Sullivan instead of Bronson Xerri as a “strange move” following their 32-24 defeat to South Sydney on Good Friday.
Crichton sustained an injury to his AC joint after a tackle from Jack Wighton and Campbell Graham early in the second half, leading to his substitution. As Crichton clutched his shoulder in visible distress, it was clear he would not be able to continue. Smith commented on Crichton’s state, expressing concern about the injury’s severity, while Rabbitohs fullback Jye Gray appeared to suffer a shoulder issue shortly after.
The Bulldogs were ahead 18-12 at the time of Crichton’s departure, but without their captain, the team’s momentum faltered. Smith pointed out that Ciraldo’s choice to bring on O’Sullivan instead of Xerri was pivotal, stating that it disrupted their attacking flow. He emphasised that the Bulldogs’ performance dwindled following the change, leaving them unable to score.
Crichton’s situation was further confirmed post-match, as Ciraldo stated the player might be sidelined for an extended period due to the nature of his injury. This marked the second week in a row that Matt Burton had to shift from five-eighth to centre, as the team adjusted to the unexpected change in their line-up.
Connor Tracey mentioned that the Bulldogs had prepared for such adjustments and felt confident in Burton’s capability to perform at centre. Ciraldo, however, justified his decision in the press conference, emphasising the importance of communication on the field. He felt that having O’Sullivan, known for his communication skills, was necessary after losing Crichton.
As the match progressed, the Rabbitohs seized the opportunity and ultimately overpowered the Bulldogs, turning the tide in their favour. The game’s dynamics shifted dramatically after Crichton’s injury, highlighting how crucial a player can be in close encounters.
