Heather Jones, a veteran truck driver from the Pilbara region, has recently highlighted the severity of Australia’s ongoing fuel crisis, citing it as the worst she has seen in her 35 years in the transport industry. With fuel prices soaring, trucking companies are facing significant financial pressure, which she warns will ultimately impact all Australians.

Jones, the founder of the Pilbara Heavy Haulage Girls Group, reports alarming increases in diesel costs, which recently hit over $3 per litre, nearly doubling her fuel expenses from $2,500 to $5,500 for a full tank within just a month. A large transport operator has even implemented a staggering 70% fuel levy on freight charges, suggesting that consumers will soon feel the financial strain through increased prices on goods and services, notably food and travel.

In response to the rising costs, trucking companies are struggling to remain viable. Despite some relief from the federal government’s decision to cut fuel excise by 32 cents per litre, many transport operators are still grappling with exorbitant diesel costs. Heather explains that the current situation has forced companies to adopt more fuel-efficient driving methods, and some regions have imposed fuel limits to manage supply.

The escalating fuel crisis has also led to increased theft of fuel from trucks, requiring drivers to ensure their fuel caps are secured to prevent loss. Amid these challenges, Heather has appealed for patience from motorists, requesting that they allow truck drivers the necessary space and time to carry out their duties efficiently.

She emphasises the critical role that trucking plays in Australia’s supply chain, asserting that without trucks, the fundamentals of feeding the nation would falter. Heather expresses concern not only for the financial repercussions on her business and family—her daughters also work with her—but also for the mental health challenges faced by truck drivers during these taxing times.

As the industry confronts this crisis, the resilience and resourcefulness of Australia’s truck drivers remain essential for maintaining the country’s vital transport networks.
