A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has occurred off the eastern coast of Indonesia, leading to tsunami alerts for multiple countries. According to the United States Geological Survey, the tremor struck this morning in the Northern Molucca Sea, close to the city of Ternate. The earthquake originated at a depth of 10 kilometres.
The epicentre was reported to be approximately 120 kilometres from Ternate, a coastal city located in North Maluku province, which is home to over 200,000 residents. Following the seismic event, the US Tsunami Warning System indicated that dangerous tsunami waves could potentially affect coastlines within a 1,000-kilometre radius of the epicentre, including regions in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia.
