Donald Trump Abruptly Exits Supreme Court Amid Anticipated Defeat

Donald Trump has left the Supreme Court prematurely as his significant policy proposal faced tough questioning from the justices. Upon entering the courtroom unnoticed by the judges, he remained seated in the public gallery for about an hour before exiting, despite having no subsequent official engagements for 90 minutes after his departure.

The core of Trump’s case seeks to challenge a constitutional amendment from 1868, which automatically provides citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil. However, the judges appeared unconvinced by his administration’s argument. Solicitor General John Sauer contended that the citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment was originally designed to bestow citizenship upon newly freed slaves and their descendants. He further argued that it does not extend to children born to temporary visa holders or undocumented immigrants, as these groups lack direct allegiance to the U.S.

Even among the court’s conservative justices, there were signs of scepticism towards Sauer’s defence. Chief Justice John Roberts raised concerns about examples provided to support the argument, such as children of foreign ambassadors and those born during wartime invasions, noting they were atypical cases compared to the broader category of children born to illegal immigrants.

Trump later took to Truth Social to express his views, claiming the U.S. is uniquely “stupid” for allowing birthright citizenship, a statement that inaccurately implies the U.S. is alone in this practice; in fact, roughly 30 countries, predominantly in the Americas, also offer this policy.

The Supreme Court’s ruling on the matter is expected in the coming months, though legal experts predict they may rule against Trump. Should his argument succeed, the policy would shift to assign citizenship based on the parents’ nationality rather than the birthplace of the child. Interestingly, Trump’s own roots in the U.S. reflect a contrasting narrative, as both of his parents immigrated; his mother was Scottish and became a U.S. citizen in 1942, while his father had German immigrant origins.
