Australia’s Skies to Dazzle with a Gorgeous Pink Moon This Week

Aussies are encouraged to gaze at the sky this week as the April full moon, referred to as the Pink Moon, will reach its peak tomorrow. The full moon is expected to hit its maximum brightness at 1.11pm AEDT on April 2, making it visible even during daylight hours, contingent on local weather conditions.

It’s important to note that the Pink Moon won’t actually appear pink. Instead, it will glow in its usual silvery hue, although atmospheric dust or pollution can sometimes create a slight rosy tint when it’s close to the horizon. The name “Pink Moon” is derived from the early spring blooms of the wildflower Phlox subulata in the Northern Hemisphere, rather than the moon’s colour.

While the official peak occurs midday, it is anticipated that the moon will look its brightest later in the evening. In New South Wales, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, and Tasmania, the moon will rise at 11.11pm AEDT, with optimal viewing conditions expected from around 7.30pm AEDT.

Additionally, this full moon is known as the Paschal Moon, which plays a significant role in determining the date of Easter in many Christian traditions. The Pink Moon is part of a series of 13 full moons observed throughout 2026. This lunar event follows last month’s total lunar eclipse, popularly dubbed a “blood moon”, which captivated many Australians with its striking red appearance.

For the best viewing experience of the Pink Moon, it’s recommended to seek out dark areas away from the city’s light pollution. Looking towards clear skies will also enhance the viewing conditions.

The upcoming full moon, known as the Flower Moon, is set to occur on May 1.
