US President Donald Trump has voiced his displeasure towards allied nations that have been hesitant to increase their support for the US military efforts, particularly in response to rising petrol prices caused by the ongoing conflict with Iran and its closure of the Strait of Hormuz. In a recent social media post, Trump notably told these allies, including the UK and France, to “go get your own oil,” suggesting they need to take more responsibility for their own security.

He expressed frustration that these nations have refrained from participating in a war lacking a clear objective and in which they had not been consulted. Trump highlighted that Iran is in a significantly weakened state, asserting that the challenging aspects of the conflict are behind them. “You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself,” he stated, alluding to the notion that the US may not be as willing to offer assistance in the future.

Specifically, Trump called out France for its refusal to allow US aircraft to transit through its airspace when transporting military supplies to Israel, indicating a breach in cooperation among ally nations.

In response to these tensions, France has permitted the US Air Force access to the Istres base in southern France, albeit under the stipulation that these operations would not involve offensive strikes. Spain has also taken a firm stance, announcing the closure of its airspace to US planes engaged in the conflict, emerging as one of the most vocal critics of the military campaign in Europe.

Italy has likewise limited US operations, reportedly denying access to the Sigonella air base in Sicily for relevant military missions. Nevertheless, Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto reassured that US access to other military bases remains intact, refuting any claims of deteriorating relations between Italy and the US.

This growing disconnect among traditional allies underscores the complexities and geopolitical ramifications of the conflict, as nations reassess their military commitments and partnerships in light of shifting public sentiment and strategic interests.
