Police were able to track down fugitive Dezi Freeman, who was involved in the killing of two police officers, by monitoring a vehicle making repeated journeys between the town of Porepunkah and a property in Thologolong, where Freeman was eventually shot in a confrontation with police. According to reports, authorities received a tip-off about an individual linked to Freeman who made the nearly 200-kilometre round trip frequently. Detectives employed traffic cameras to trace the vehicle’s movements, ultimately guiding them to Freeman’s location.
Despite the conclusion of the manhunt for Freeman, investigations are now focusing on his associates. Anyone who may have assisted Freeman, whether by harbouring him or transporting him, could face significant legal repercussions of up to 20 years in prison. Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush stated that efforts would continue to identify those who aided Freeman as part of their investigations.
A neighbour of the property owner expressed scepticism about any links between Freeman and the owner, describing him as a quiet individual who has lived in eastern Tasmania since December and is dealing with a serious illness. This owner has reportedly made himself available for police interviews when necessary. The property’s gate has remained unlocked since January to ensure access for the fire department.
Police are expected to stay on the scene for several days to search the premises for additional evidence related to Freeman or any other individuals who may have visited recently. Following the shootout, Freeman’s body has been sent to Melbourne for an examination by the state coroner, who will conduct a separate review of the circumstances surrounding his death.
In response to Freeman’s actions and the growing concern over the sovereign citizen movement in Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has highlighted the potential danger posed by such ideologies. He noted that this mindset poses challenges to law enforcement and governmental legitimacy. A former friend of Freeman, Ray Kompe, revealed that Freeman’s views had become increasingly radical, alienating some from his social circle. Kope remarked on the mixed responses from the local community towards Freeman, acknowledging that while some sympathised with him, others were opposed to his beliefs and actions.
With investigations ongoing and an autopsy set to occur, authorities are keen to understand the broader network of support that may have enabled Freeman’s actions and ideologies.
