Is It Worth the Gamble? Sneaky Contract Clause Could Let Frustrated Max Verstappen Leave F1 Mid-Season

Max Verstappen, the 28-year-old Dutch Formula 1 driver, has sparked speculation about his potential retirement from the sport. His Red Bull Racing contract reportedly includes a clause that would permit him to leave the team or take a hiatus if he is not ranked in the top two by the summer break. This is a shift from last season, where his exit option was contingent upon the team being outside the top three of the drivers’ championship.

This season has seen changes to the cars that Verstappen has openly critiqued, likening racing in 2026 to “Mario Kart”. Currently sitting ninth in the drivers’ standings, he feels that these modifications have significantly diminished his enjoyment of driving. He has articulated his concerns about whether it is worth continuing in a sport where he finds himself less engaged and contemplating his well-being over competitive pursuits.

Adding to the urgency of his situation, with two races already cancelled this season, the time frame for him to make a decision is pressing. The missed races have made it increasingly difficult for him to climb back into contention, especially with strong performances from competitors including Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari, and rising stars like Oliver Bearman and Pierre Gasly.

While there are questions about his future, reports suggest that should Verstappen decide to step away, it may not equate to a full retirement, but rather a break from Red Bull. He is currently contracted until the end of 2028, yet the exit clause complicates things. After four consistent years of dominance between 2021 and 2024, where he clinched 71 grand prix victories, his current sentiments represent a stark contrast to that success.

In an interview with the BBC following the Japanese Grand Prix, Verstappen expressed a more contemplative mood, reflecting on the balance between his professional commitments and personal happiness. He mentioned the challenges of waiting through a full season, questioning whether the time spent racing is worth the sacrifices made away from family and friends.

As he prepares for the next race in Miami on May 3, the unexpected month-long break from racing could either rejuvenate his passion for the sport or reinforce his desire to step back, prioritising family time over the pressures of Formula 1. Verstappen’s recent performances, including a sixth-place finish in Melbourne followed by a retirement in China due to car troubles, only add to the uncertainty of his trajectory in the coming months.
