In a recent discussion, Broncos great Sam Thaiday recounted a conversation he had with a disheartened Gehamat Shibasaki following the latter’s exclusion from the NRL team. Despite a stellar season that had seen Shibasaki progress from reserve grade to representing Queensland in State of Origin, the 28-year-old found himself sidelined after just two games in the 2026 season, as coach Michael Maguire opted for different players.
Amid his teammates celebrating an unexpected win against Melbourne, Shibasaki’s spirits were low—he recognised the challenge of reclaiming his place. Thaiday encouraged him to focus on rebuilding his confidence and honing his skills.
However, in rugby league, fortunes can shift quickly. An injury to Grant Anderson during a recent match against the Dolphins presented Shibasaki with an unexpected opportunity. He stepped in as a substitute, scoring a pivotal try and contributing to Brisbane’s 26-12 victory at Suncorp Stadium. Thaiday remarked on Shibasaki’s unexpected role and emphasised the importance of transforming this chance into a lasting position within the team.
Going forward, the challenge for Shibasaki will be maintaining consistency in his performances. Thaiday noted that the jersey is now his to keep but also to lose, highlighting the pressures that come with regaining form after a setback.
Additionally, Thaiday mentioned that fellow Bronco Jesse Arthars, who has yet to make an appearance in first grade this season, could also see a return to the line-up as the team prepares to face the Titans. Arthars has remained patient despite sitting out, and Thaiday views his situation as a valuable lesson in perseverance and readiness for when opportunities arise.
As the Broncos gear up for their next match, all eyes will be on how these players leverage their chances on the field.
