Israel Issues Warning: Attacks on Iran ‘Will Escalate and Expand’ Amid Trump’s Claims of Progress in Ceasefire Negotiations

On Friday, tensions escalated as Israel warned of intensifying attacks on Iran while US President Donald Trump claimed negotiations for ending the conflict were progressing. However, Iran showed no intention of conceding. The volatile situation has had detrimental effects on global stock markets, with Trump facing pressure to address Iran’s control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for oil.

Iran dismissed a US ceasefire proposal demanding relinquishment of the strait, subsequently mobilising thousands of troops to counter potential military action aimed at reclaiming control over the waterway. Trump has threatened to target Iran’s energy facilities if the strait remains closed by the deadline of April 6, denying engaging in any negotiations with the US.

In response to ongoing hostilities, Israel’s military has reported daily interceptions of Iranian missiles, asserting that retaliatory attacks will be intensified against sites linked to Iran’s weapons production. Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that Iran would face severe consequences for its continued aggression. Attacks on Iranian facilities were conducted, reportedly targeting missile production locations in Tehran.

Meanwhile, Iran has launched strikes against Gulf Arab nations, with Saudi Arabian forces successfully intercepting missiles aimed at Riyadh. Significant damage was reported at Kuwaiti ports involved in Chinese development projects, marking a rare instance of such infrastructure under threat amidst the ongoing conflict. Global oil prices are rising sharply, reflecting anxiety over the sustained conflict and uncertainties surrounding a diplomatic resolution.

On the diplomatic front, the US has attempted to broker a ceasefire through a 15-point action list, delivered via Pakistan, which includes restrictions on Iran’s nuclear aspirations and demands for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Iran countered with its five-point proposal demanding recognition of its sovereignty and reparations.

Failing attempts to facilitate negotiations have prompted increased military presence from the US in the region, including the deployment of Marines and paratroopers prepared for rapid interventions. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council will be addressing the situation in a closed session requested by Russia.

The humanitarian impact of the conflict is severe, with reports from the Norwegian Refugee Council indicating extensive damage to civilian infrastructure in Iran, leading to threats of a broader humanitarian disaster. Over 1900 fatalities in Iran and more than 1100 in Lebanon highlight the human cost of this escalating conflict, as civilian populations bear the brunt of the violence.
