A potential fuel levy surcharge of up to 5 per cent may soon be added to bills at Australian restaurants, cafes, and pubs in response to rising fuel prices resulting from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The Australian Restaurant and Cafe Association (ARCA) has voiced concerns that hospitality venues, already operating on very slim profit margins, cannot bear the financial burden imposed by suppliers due to inflated transport and delivery costs.

Wes Lambert, the chief executive of the ARCA, stressed that these costs need to be passed onto consumers, stating that businesses are not in a position to absorb additional expenses without jeopardising their viability. As Lambert explained to Yahoo Finance, the industry is endorsing the introduction of a temporary surcharge to manage the current economic pressures stemming from fuel costs and supply chain disruptions.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) confirms that businesses are permitted to set their own prices, which includes the ability to impose surcharges. However, it is essential that any additional fees are clearly communicated to customers before they place an order.

Local business owners, like Ruby Rule from Queensland, are already experiencing increased costs from suppliers, with fuel levy surcharges ranging from $1 to $4 impacting their operations significantly. Rule, who owns three cafes, noted that with numerous weekly orders, these added costs can accumulate quickly and substantially affect the bottom line.

Lambert pointed out that some suppliers require restaurants to place larger orders to reduce delivery frequencies, which further compounds the financial strain on smaller businesses that cannot bear the increased logistical costs. He highlighted that while many industries are facing similar pressures, cafes and restaurants are particularly vulnerable and require community support while navigating these challenges.

Moreover, this discussion emerges amid governmental deliberations regarding credit and debit card surcharge regulations, potential changes to junior pay rates, and anticipated minimum wage increases. Lambert urged diners to focus their concerns on their local government representatives rather than businesses, who are also feeling the pressure from rising costs.

In summary, the hospitality sector may soon implement a temporary surcharge to cope with the surge in operational costs driven by the fuel price hike, urging customers to be understanding of the situation they face.
