Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle is intensifying as it approaches Western Australia’s coast, currently classified as a category 4 storm. A warning zone has been established, affecting regions from Whim Creek to Northampton, including Karratha, Exmouth, and surrounding areas. Residents have been urged to stay indoors as emergency alerts have been issued, with significant rainfall already recorded—72 millimetres in Karratha and 65 millimetres at Barrow Island.
As the cyclone nears, gale-force winds are being experienced along the coastline, and Exmouth is expected to be first in the storm’s path. Local authorities are concerned that Narelle could escalate to a category 5 storm soon, prompting anxiety among residents. Many have rushed to stock up on supplies, with shops in Exmouth closing early to prepare for the coming deluge.
Nearer to Carnarvon, the town is preparing for Narelle’s anticipated impact as it’s projected to hit as a downgraded category 3 storm. This would be the third significant weather event to affect the region in 2023, following a heatwave and Cyclone Mitchell, which recently devastated crops. Should Narelle destroy crops, growers could face an 18-month banana shortage, although current supplies from Queensland may mitigate market impacts.
Local emergency services are on alert, with officials stressing the importance of safety and urging the public to secure loose items around their homes. They warn that severe wind impacts could reach over 200 km/h, endangering life and property.
The cyclone’s progression will likely impact Perth, with forecasts predicting heavy rain totaling up to 100 millimetres over the weekend. Many local events have been cancelled due to the expected weather conditions.
Authorities are emphasising the need for constant updates and prudent preparation as the storm approaches. There are concerns regarding the lack of cyclone-rated evacuation shelters in some areas once Narelle tracks further south. Residents in affected regions are being reminded to take safety protocols seriously as they brace for Narelle’s impending arrival.
