A Sydney high school teacher has been arrested following claims of posing as a teenager online to solicit explicit material from a 14-year-old girl in exchange for money. The 29-year-old, a music teacher at Newington College, allegedly pretended to be a 17-year-old during their online conversations, which came to light when the girl’s parents reported the situation after noticing her unusual online interactions.
This prompted police to conduct a pre-dawn raid in Sydney’s northern suburbs, where they arrested the teacher and seized several electronic devices. Authorities suggest that child abuse material was found among the items seized. He has been charged with using a communication service to groom a minor for sexual activity and accessing child abuse material.
Detective Acting Superintendent Karl Leis, commander of the Sex Crimes Squad, highlighted the importance of the girl’s communication with her parents, which ultimately led to the police being informed. Police allege the online communications had commenced just eight days prior to the parents’ report.
Leis confirmed that the girl was not in danger at any point during the incident and noted that the teacher had reached out to a vulnerable minor whom he did not know personally. He mentioned that the monetary offer made to the girl was not substantial. The police are urging other potential victims to come forward and report their experiences.
After being taken to Gladesville Police Station, the teacher was refused bail and is set to appear in court today. The school has reacted swiftly, terminating his employment upon learning of the allegations. Newington College released a statement asserting that there have been no identified victims among its current or recent students and confirmed that the teacher had complied with all mandatory child protection training and held a valid Working with Children Check without prior complaints.
Police continue to investigate the matter thoroughly as they encourage any further victims to speak out and report to authorities.
