Trent Robinson has confirmed that Joseph Manu will not be making a return to the Sydney Roosters this season. The star centre, who has left the club to pursue a career in rugby union, is currently playing for Japanese side Toyota Verblitz, where he has scored five tries in ten matches before their season concludes ahead of the NRL’s June 30 contract deadline.

Despite speculation suggesting he might return to the Roosters after his time in Japan, Robinson has categorically denied this. He stated, “We were resigned to that a long time ago,” adding that he was aware of Manu’s future plans for six to nine months and that a return to the Roosters was never an option.

Manu, a beloved figure in the Roosters ranks, played all 181 games of his NRL career while grabbing two premiership titles in 2018 and 2019. His departure has left a noticeable gap in the Roosters’ backline, but Robinson expressed confidence in players like Robert Toia and Mark Nawaqanitawase to step up and fill the void left by Manu.

“We believe in the guys we have got in those areas; we just need to prove that they can deliver at the NRL level,” Robinson remarked, acknowledging the challenge ahead of the team. After a rough start to the season with a 50-14 loss to Brisbane, the Roosters are set to face the defending champions, Penrith, and Robinson is eager to see his players rise to the occasion.

He emphasised the importance of continuous improvement and adaptation within the team, highlighting the coaching process and the need for the players to show their capabilities as the season progresses.
