After an extensive search lasting ten days, the body of two-year-old Dane Paulsen was discovered by a volunteer diver in the Siletz River, Oregon. His remains were found nearly 5 kilometers downstream from his family’s home, located north of Siletz, which is approximately 200 kilometers south of Portland.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the tragic discovery, which unfolded on Tuesday (Wednesday AEDT). The authorities had mobilised hundreds of volunteers and emergency responders from various state and federal agencies to aid in the search, utilising specialised equipment, dogs, drones, and watercraft following Dane’s disappearance from his family’s yard.
Juan Heredia, a diving instructor and founder of the non-profit Angels Recovery Dive Team, located Dane after conducting a two-hour dive in the cold waters of the river. Heredia expressed his motivation to help the family find closure, stating, “A lot of people put a lot of faith in me.” His search led him to discover the boy’s body near a tree, in an area that had already been scoured by law enforcement.
Following the recovery, Heredia shared an emotional moment with Dane’s mother, who thanked him while they both wept together. He described it as “a terrible moment with no words,” reflecting the profound sorrow surrounding the situation.
Lincoln County Sheriff Adam Shanks extended condolences to Dane’s family, acknowledging their unbearable grief and expressing gratitude for the community’s support throughout the search efforts, emphasising the shared hope that circumstances could have been different.
The community’s response highlighted the deep empathy and unity among those involved, who rallied together in the face of adversity to seek answers for the grieving family.
