An urgent recall has been issued for potentially hazardous table lamps sold at Panda Mart, a new discount store located in Cranbourne, south-east Melbourne. The warning was released by Energy Safe Victoria after compliance officers discovered dangerous exposed wiring on the lamps.
Leanne Hughson, the chief executive of Energy Safe Victoria, emphasised the grave risk associated with these lamps, stating they could result in electric shocks or electrocution, especially when touched while powered on. Customers who have bought these table lamps are urged to stop using them immediately.
Since Panda Mart’s opening on February 27, hundreds of shoppers are believed to have purchased these lamps. The store, which sells a wide array of products from homewares to beauty items, is now under scrutiny for safety violations. Some lamps featured removable covers over their wiring, while others had exposed wires that allowed access to live electrical parts.
In addition to the lamps, inspectors found unsafe study desks equipped with socket outlets that also posed the risk of exposing live components. Amidst these safety concerns, it is expected that the retailer will cease the sale of the table lamps without delay.
Energy Safe Victoria’s inspection revealed further risks, with some toys and baby rattles containing button batteries inadequately secured, which could potentially harm or be fatal to children. The situation highlights a critical need for vigilance regarding product safety within retail environments.
Consumers are strongly encouraged to remain cautious and report any such items posing similar risks.
