Josh Giddey, the talented Australian basketball player for the Chicago Bulls, is poised for a significant contract upgrade following his impressive performances on the court. Currently under a four-year deal worth around $42 million AUD, the 22-year-old could secure a substantial pay rise in the off-season. Since the All-Star break, Giddey has proven himself as a strong contender for the team’s starting point guard position.
This season, he has delivered four consecutive double-double games, averaging 13.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game. Notably, his scoring average has surged to 23.1 points from February to March, while sporting an impressive 52.5% success rate from three-point territory.
The Bulls chose not to extend Giddey’s contract by the previous season’s rookie contract extension deadline, making him a restricted free agent at the end of the current season. Nevertheless, the franchise holds the right to match any offer he receives when he enters the open market, indicating they may still want him in their ranks.
Prominent NBA reporter Brian Windhorst suggests the Bulls might aim to re-sign Giddey for around $47 million AUD annually, reflecting an increase from his current salary. Windhorst expressed optimism about Giddey’s potential, noting that after some recent changes to the team’s roster, Giddey has had the chance to demonstrate his capabilities fully. He highlighted that the average salary for a starting NBA point guard hovers around USD 30 million, positioning Giddey well within this range. Even though Giddey may not score as much as his counterpart, Immanuel Quickley, who recently signed a lucrative contract, Windhorst anticipates Giddey will land a favourable deal.
The Bulls face a decision on whether to offer Giddey a one-year deal, which would allow him to enter negotiations as an unrestricted free agent in the next off-season, or to secure him for a long-term contract now. They have already made a significant investment in Giddey by acquiring him at the cost of veteran Alex Caruso. Windhorst believes it would be prudent for the Bulls to invest further in Giddey if they view him as their point guard of the future.
Drawing from past experiences with restricted free agents, Windhorst expects the Bulls to take serious steps towards finalising a contract agreement with Giddey soon. Whether this occurs in the current year or if he must wait another season, the sentiment is clear – Giddey is a player of great promise, and a long-term contract seems likely.
