Veteran coach Ross Lyon has secured a contract extension with St Kilda, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2027 season, bringing some relief to the pressures he faces heading into the 2025 season. Club president Andrew Bassat announced the move on Wednesday, citing the need for “stability in leadership” as a key reason for the extension.
At 58 years old, Lyon is set to commence his third season in his second tenure at the Saints, having returned to replace Brett Ratten after the 2022 AFL season. While Lyon has yet to clinch a premiership, he is widely respected for his tactical acumen. His recent extension is intended to provide him with the time necessary to develop the team’s potential into tangible results.
Bassat highlighted the significant progress made since Lyon’s return, stating that the club has transformed from one of the oldest squads to one of the youngest through careful list management. This has included enhancing player development, increasing game time for players under 21, and assembling a strong coaching panel while refining operational processes.
As the 2025 season approaches, St Kilda is set to face the Adelaide Crows in their opening match this Sunday. After an impressive return to finals in his first season back, finishing sixth in 2023, the Saints had a setback last season, falling to 12th place, two wins shy of the finals.
Lyon expressed his enthusiasm for leading the Saints, stating he remains as passionate about coaching as when he first joined the club over 15 years ago. He emphasised the honour of being the senior coach and his commitment to elevating those around him, aiming to fulfil the club’s potential. Lyon assured fans of his and his team’s dedication to making significant strides towards achieving success in the coming years.
