Newcastle Knights coach Adam O’Brien has declined to comment on Dylan Brown’s recent signing, despite the player confirming his move from the Parramatta Eels. On Monday night, Brown announced via Instagram that he will join the Knights on a significant 10-year deal, reportedly valued at up to $14 million. The Eels have also acknowledged his departure at the end of the season, though the Knights have yet to officially announce the agreement.
When approached by the media prior to their upcoming match against the Dolphins at Hunter Stadium, O’Brien firmly stated, “I’m not talking about Dylan Brown.” He emphasised his focus on the upcoming game rather than the player transfer drama, indicating that there is a formal process in place regarding player contracts that necessitates respect. Further pressed about his thoughts on Brown’s abilities, O’Brien reiterated his stance by saying, “I’ll find a different way to give you the same answer,” maintaining that his attention is squarely on the current roster and preparations for the match.
In the wake of Brown’s announcement, some analysts, including Matty Johns, have questioned the Knights’ decision, noting that while Brown is a talented five-eighth, the team is in need of a halfback. This criticism comes as the Knights faced uncertainties in their playmaking roles, using Fletcher Sharpe in the number six shirt and Jack Cogger at halfback during their narrow victory over the Tigers in round one. The Knights will continue with this lineup in the upcoming game against the Dolphins.
As the situation develops, the NRL is yet to approve Brown’s contract, keeping the focus on the Knights and their strategies ahead of this crucial match.
