Olivia D’Accione is grieving after the tragic loss of her 10-month-old dog, Enzo, who was fatally attacked by two off-leash dogs while they were walked in Largs, Maitland, New South Wales. On February 18, during a stroll with a friend at Ernie Jurd Oval, an American Bull Terrier and an American Staffordshire Terrier suddenly approached from behind and launched a brutal attack on Enzo.
Both D’Accione and Enzo sustained injuries, with D’Accione receiving bites on her arms and legs, but Enzo’s injuries were catastrophic. Despite efforts to save him, he was ultimately euthanised because his wounds were too severe. Loredena, Olivia’s sister, shared the heartbreaking decision to end Enzo’s suffering, stating that he sacrificed himself to protect other pets and children from similar fates.
The loss has left D’Accione devastated, prompting her family to organise a GoFundMe campaign to assist in covering the veterinary costs. Loredena described the profound bond shared between Olivia and Enzo, emphasising his loving nature and the void his departure has left in their lives.
In response to the incident, a spokesperson from Maitland City Council confirmed that the two attacking dogs were euthanised following an investigation, which found the attack unprovoked and the injuries inflicted on Enzo severe. The council reiterated that all dogs in public spaces are required by law to be leashed and under control, and pointed out that Ernie Jurd Oval is a designated no-dog area, irrespective of leash control.
Olivia is now left to navigate life without her cherished companion, grappling with the trauma of the incident and the guilt of being unable to protect Enzo. Her sister expressed the heartache of watching Olivia cope with this challenging reality, explaining that Enzo was not just a pet but a true hero in the face of such unprovoked aggression.
