A Qantas domestic flight faced an unexpected medical incident when the captain experienced chest pains. The flight, identified as QF505, was en route from Brisbane to Sydney on a Boeing 737 when the situation arose. Thankfully, the captain was not at the controls; the first officer promptly requested a priority landing, indicating potential assistance was required.
According to reports from the Sydney Morning Herald, the flight crew was vigilant, and the captain even asked for the use of a defibrillator. While the defibrillator pads were applied in the cockpit, they were not activated, as the situation did not escalate to that level. Meanwhile, the first officer successfully piloted the aircraft and landed in Sydney without incident.
Upon landing, which occurred approximately 20 minutes later than scheduled at 9:01 am, paramedics were ready on the tarmac to provide immediate assistance. The captain was treated and subsequently taken to a hospital for further evaluation. Qantas later confirmed the incident, assuring that everything was executed smoothly and that the aircraft landed normally.
The Air Transport Safety Bureau acknowledged they have been made aware of the event and are in the process of gathering further details regarding the situation.
