Chaz Mostert has proposed hosting a Race of Champions-style event for Supercars after achieving a remarkable second place in Saturday’s individual Champion of Champions competition. Mostert narrowly lost to nine-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb, who secured his fifth title following a 2-0 victory in the final.

Mostert expressed surprise at reaching the final in the first place, having received a late call to replace the unwell Mattias Ekström. In the quarter-finals, Mostert defeated former F1 driver Sebastian Vettel and then faced fellow Australian driver Will Brown in a thrilling semi-final.

While discussing the potential for a similar event in Supercars, Mostert highlighted the enjoyment such competitions bring to drivers, especially when they venture outside the norm. However, he also acknowledged the logistical challenges and high costs associated with organising such a large-scale event at a national level.

“We have so much fun when we get to do something a bit different,” Mostert remarked, suggesting that an off-season event combining various vehicles and disciplines would be exciting. He emphasised the need for strong fan turnout to make it financially viable.

Despite losing to Loeb, Mostert demonstrated competitive skill, pushing the seasoned racer to tight finishes in both final races. When asked about future participation in these events, he expressed enthusiasm but noted that he would need suitable conditions to excel.

Reflecting on the atmosphere during the event, he credited the support from local fans as a significant motivator, stating, “We feel that energy as Supercar drivers.” He acknowledged, however, that adapting to different racing conditions would require time and experience.

Loeb, who advanced through the competition after receiving a bye, showcased his prowess in both the Polaris buggy and the FC2 Rallycross car, securing tight victories to clinch the title. He expressed that the competition had been intense, highlighting the impressive performances from drivers across various formats.

In conclusion, Mostert’s enthusiasm for a Supercars adaptation of the Race of Champions indicates a desire to broaden the sport’s appeal while fostering camaraderie among drivers. As the sport evolves, events like these could potentially enhance the Australian motorsport landscape, despite their challenges.
