Queensland Premier David Crisafulli has issued a stern warning for residents to avoid beaches in areas affected by Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Despite the risks, many locals, including children, have been seen playing in the large waves and foam along the Gold Coast and northern NSW. The Gold Coast City Council has announced hefty fines of $16,100 for those breaking disaster-related restrictions.

Crisafulli noted that while most people acted responsibly, a few “idiots” were putting themselves and emergency services at risk. He emphasised that reckless behaviour not only jeopardises personal safety but also endangers the lives of first responders, who have families to consider as well. His intention is to protect public safety rather than enforce harsh measures.

Gold Coast chief lifeguard Chris Maynard cautioned against beach outings during the cyclone, explaining how deceptively safe spots can quickly become perilous due to sudden surges that can knock individuals off their feet. He highlighted the unpredictability of ocean conditions in severe weather.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese echoed these sentiments, urging the public to take personal responsibility and avoid unnecessary dangers. He discouraged sightseeing during the cyclone and stressed the importance of staying at a safe distance from hazardous areas. Albanese urged residents to heed evacuation orders from the State Emergency Service (SES), as their expertise is crucial in managing public safety during emergencies.

Overall, authorities are calling for caution and responsible behaviour as the cyclone continues to affect coastal regions.
