James Harrison, affectionately dubbed the “Man with the Golden Arm,” passed away peacefully on February 17 at Peninsula Village Nursing Home, as confirmed by Australian Red Cross Lifeblood. He was renowned for being the world’s most prolific blood and plasma donor, starting his journey in the 1950s thanks to his unique antibody, Anti-D.

Over the course of his life, Harrison donated an impressive 1,173 times, contributing to the survival of over two million babies. His donations were critical in providing Anti-D, a serum administered to mothers at risk of passing dangerous antibodies to their infants. Harrison began donating blood at the tender age of 18 in 1954 and continued until his retirement in 2018 at 81 years old.

His daughter, Tracey Mellowship, fondly remembered him as a hilarious and generous man. She shared, “James was a humanitarian at heart, but also very funny,” highlighting his caring nature. In his later years, he took great pride in becoming a great-grandfather to Trey and Addison, stating that his blood donations had indirectly allowed their existence as Anti-D recipients.

Stephen Cornelissen, CEO of Lifeblood, praised Harrison’s remarkable lifetime of giving and his desire for everyone to consider their contributions to be equally significant. He noted, “James extended his arm to help others… and expected nothing in return,” a testament to Harrison’s altruism.

Even after enduring personal loss, including the death of his wife Barbara, Harrison remained committed to donating blood. His enduring legacy continues to inspire many as he hoped for someone to surpass his donation record in the future.

In his passing, Harrison’s rare blood type may still contribute to advances in medical research, with hopes that scientists can use his blood to potentially develop lab-grown Anti-D. Cornelissen expressed gratitude on behalf of Lifeblood and the wider community for Harrison’s invaluable contributions, which saved countless lives during his lifetime.

James Harrison is remembered not just for the lives he saved, but for embodying the spirit of selflessness and generosity that continues to resonate within the community.
