Ryan Peake, a former member of the Rebels gang in Australia, has transformed his life through golf, recently securing a spot in the British Open after winning the 104th New Zealand Open by a single stroke. The 31-year-old Western Australian described his victory as “life-changing” after he successfully made an 8-foot par putt on the final hole, narrowly avoiding a four-way playoff against compatriot Jack Thompson, South African Ian Snyman, and Japan’s Kazuki Higi. His impressive final-round score of 66 brought his total to 23-under par, earning him approximately $181,000.
Peake’s journey to this moment has been anything but straightforward. Once a promising junior golfer and team member of famous Australian golfer Cameron Smith, Peake’s life took a turn when he was convicted of assault at 21, serving five years in prison. His involvement with the outlawed Rebels gang was a significant part of his past, but after his release, he sought redemption through golf, aided by renowned coach Richie Smith and the unwavering support of his family.
Before his recent triumph, Peake faced challenges, including a delayed entry to New Zealand due to his criminal record, and he will require clearance to compete in the UK for the British Open at Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland. Despite these obstacles, Peake persevered, earning his Australasian tour card this season and achieving his first professional win.
“I always knew I could do it, but it was just a matter of when,” Peake expressed, crediting his family and supporters for their encouragement. Starting the final round four strokes behind overnight leader Guntaek Koh from South Korea, Peake managed a bogey-free performance over the last three rounds and took the lead for the first time with just six holes to play.
Reflecting on his transformation, Peake stated, “I’ve just changed my life. This is what I do. I just want to be here and play golf.” He acknowledged the significance of his story while reiterating that his focus remains on his love for the game. With determination and resilience, Ryan Peake is not only reclaiming his life but also making a mark on the professional golf scene.
