In the quaint coastal town of Paraty, Brazil, hundreds gathered on Saturday for a unique Carnival celebration steeped in tradition, marking its vibrant history that stretches back nearly 40 years. This annual event, popularly known as the mud party, saw enthusiastic revelers throwing themselves into the muddy waters of Jabaquara Beach, emerging covered in grey sludge and ready to partake in the festivities.

As partygoers danced joyfully on the beach, they chanted playful caveman sounds like “Uga! Uga!” while marching along the sandy shoreline. Attendees expressed their delight, with one participant, Thais Beazussi, noting, “It’s the best bloco. It’s not often that you can get muddy and go around dancing and singing. It’s very gooey, it’s sticky and it stinks, but it’s very good.” Her dedication to the event was evident as she travelled nearly two hours to join in the fun.

The tradition reportedly began in 1986 when a group of friends, while playing in the mangroves, realised they were unrecognisable due to the mud covering them. Their prehistoric-themed antics evolved into a beloved annual event that has attracted increasing numbers of participants over the years. This growth has necessitated greater awareness from organisers and the local tourist office, emphasising the need to keep the town’s colourful buildings and surroundings clean.

Carnival in Brazil is renowned for its extravagant parades featuring samba schools that prepare year-round, alongside vibrant street parties full of unique themes, aesthetics, and musical styles. The mud party, however, stands out as a playful and spirited tribute to the unconventional.

As the event continues to flourish, it brings forth both celebration and caution, combining uninhibited fun with a mindful approach to the picturesque environment of Paraty. The mud may be a source of joy, but its messy aftermath calls for a collective responsibility amongst revelers to protect the town’s appeal while enjoying one of Brazil’s most quirky Carnival experiences.
