Scott McLaughlin announced a long-term contract extension with Team Penske as the 2025 IndyCar season approaches, revealing the news shortly before the Grand Prix of St Petersburg in Florida. The New Zealand driver, who transitioned to IndyCar after a successful stint in Supercars, finished third in the championship last year.
“Signed a long-term extension in the off-season with Team Penske and have been absolutely 100% focused on prep for this year. Let’s kick this season off right! STRAIGHT. TO. THE. MOON,” McLaughlin expressed in an upbeat social media post. He chose to secure his future without distraction, opting for stability after welcoming his first child, a daughter named Lucy, in October.
When asked about exploring NASCAR opportunities within Team Penske, McLaughlin mentioned discussions with team owner Roger Penske, leaving the door open for future possibilities contingent on his performance.
McLaughlin faced some challenges in practice, with a suspension failure leading to a crash, although he emerged unscathed. His teammate Will Power is also seeking a contract extension, with discussions expected to continue post-Indianapolis 500.
IndyCar’s 2025 season marks the introduction of a new hybrid engine system, alongside the development of a completely new car for 2027. This transition has stirred some unrest within the ownership ranks, potentially contributing to the recent dismissal of IndyCar president Jay Frye, who advocated for cost reductions. The new president, Doug Boles, has been viewed as aligning closely with Penske, raising concerns about favouritism towards the team.
On the competitive front, Alex Palou, who has dominated since joining Chip Ganassi Racing, is setting his sights on a third consecutive championship. Palou has claimed 11 victories and is currently engaged in a significant legal battle with McLaren over a contract dispute.
Josef Newgarden, a two-time Indy 500 winner, aims for yet another victory at the prestigious event, which would set a record. He noted that while their successful strategies from previous wins are in place, adjustments may be crucial if they don’t yield continued success.
Other notable drivers include Colton Herta, eyeing a move to the upcoming Cadillac Formula 1 team, and Kyle Larson, who plans to participate in the Indy 500 despite prioritising NASCAR commitments. New entries this season include the Italian team Prema Racing, featuring Callum Ilott and rookie Robert Schwartzman.
With an exciting season ahead and numerous personal and professional dynamics at play, McLaughlin and his peers are poised for an exhilarating start to the 2025 IndyCar campaign.
