This weekend, Las Vegas will welcome the NRL for its second event, with former NFL star Rob Gronkowski expressing optimism about American fans embracing rugby league. Gronkowski, who achieved remarkable success with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is now a prominent supporter of rugby league. He has actively participated in the NRL’s promotional campaign, highlighting the intense, unprotected nature of the game after training with Melbourne Storm players Cam Munster, Ryan Papenhuyzen, and Jahrome Hughes.

In a recent interview, Gronkowski shared his thoughts on the sport’s potential in the U.S., stating that Americans are drawn to thrilling plays and impactful hits, which are central to the NRL. He noted the appeal of a contact sport played without protective gear, suggesting that this could significantly attract American viewers. Gronkowski praised the league’s expansion efforts, particularly in Las Vegas, calling it a great location for building a fanbase.

Last year’s double-header at Allegiant Stadium drew a significant crowd, and this year’s series of four games is expected to surpass that. The city presents a promising opportunity for the NRL, as it competes with other major sports leagues in America. Also weighing in is UFC fighter Alexander Volkanovski, who is a passionate rugby league fan and has experienced competing in Las Vegas multiple times. He believes the NRL’s presence in the U.S. is improving, with ticket sales indicating increased interest in this year’s events.

Volkanovski expressed hope for the NRL’s growth in America, seeing the current trends as promising. He also has a personal wish for the Dragons to participate in next year’s events, which reportedly aligns with discussions for St George Illawarra to face the Canterbury Bulldogs in the 2026 season opener.

Overall, both Gronkowski and Volkanovski share a vision of expanding rugby league’s footprint in the United States, highlighting Las Vegas as a vital starting point for future growth in the sport.
