Comedian Marty Sheargold’s Triple M radio show has been cancelled following backlash over his derogatory remarks regarding the Australian women’s football team, the Matildas. In an official statement from Sheargold and Southern Cross Austereo, they confirmed their decision to “mutually part ways.” Sheargold expressed remorse, admitting the serious nature of his comments, and apologised not only to the team but also to his colleagues for the unintended consequences of his statements.

The controversy ignited when Sheargold compared the Matildas to “year 10 girls,” criticising what he perceived as petty dramas and infighting among the players. His specific comments included dismissive references to the team dynamics. Following his remarks, Sheargold found himself compelled to apologise multiple times throughout the day. In discussing the SheBelieves Cup, he made a crude joke, questioning what the women believed in, suggesting it should be in men instead.

Sheargold’s distaste for women’s sport became more apparent when he candidly stated he would prefer to harm himself than watch a men’s football tournament, suggesting a lack of respect for female athleticism. His dismissive views carried a significant impact, leading to widespread condemnation. Matildas coach Tom Sermanni branded the comments as “out of order” and unnecessary, while captain Steph Catley declared the remarks “completely unacceptable.”

Additionally, Sheargold recently stirred controversy with comments about reproductive health, labelling issues like endometriosis as “made up,” further compounding criticism of his insensitivity. Fellow Triple M host and Olympic medallist Liesel Jones was visibly upset on-air, voicing her concern about the damaging effects of such comments on women’s sports and the broader implications for young athletes — urging support for both girls and boys in sports.

In light of this incident, Southern Cross Austereo’s chief content officer stated that they would review their programming to align with audience expectations, emphasising their commitment to fostering a supportive environment for staff. While acknowledging Sheargold’s contributions over the past four years, the network affirmed a commitment to uphold standards reflective of their audience’s values, signifying a clear message about the consequences of offensive commentary in the media. A new Drive host will be announced soon to take over Sheargold’s slot.
