GWS defender Connor Idun has secured a six-year contract extension, making him one of the longest-serving players in the AFL. This agreement extends his tenure with the Giants until the end of 2032, augmenting a prior deal that was set to run through 2026. At just 24 years of age, Idun is now among six AFL players who are contracted until 2032, joining teammates like Sam Taylor and other notable players such as Port Adelaide’s Connor Rozee, St Kilda’s Max King, Richmond’s Noah Balta, and the Western Bulldogs’ Aaron Naughton.
Idun’s commitment follows the recent news of fellow GWS midfielder Finn Callaghan, who has signed a fresh four-year deal keeping him at the club until 2029. Additionally, Fremantle midfielder Hayden Young holds the longest contract in the league, having committed to the Dockers until 2033. Meanwhile, Gold Coast’s Mac Andrew has a deal set until 2030, with an option that could extend to 2034.
Reflecting on Idun’s extension, GWS football boss Jason McCartney expressed excitement about Idun’s long-term commitment to the club, praising him as an outstanding footballer and leader. “Connor has proven to be one of our most reliable and consistent players,” said McCartney, highlighting Idun’s valuable contribution to the team’s defensive capabilities. After a career-best performance last season, there’s optimism about his potential going forward.
Idun, who hails from London and has both Ghanian and Australian heritage, has played 93 AFL matches since being drafted by the Giants in 2018. He is also an integral part of the GWS leadership group, which includes captain Toby Greene and vice-captains Stephen Coniglio and Josh Kelly, among others.
As the Giants prepare to kick off their premiership campaign against Collingwood at Sydney Olympic Park on March 9, the club is buoyed by the recent re-signings of both Idun and Callaghan, which underscore the strong culture and environment at GWS.
