He explicitly warned that “UNDER NO REPEAT NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THE PRESIDENT ACTUALLY DRINK FROM HIS GLASS IN RESPONSE TO BANQUET TOASTS.” Despite this advisory, Nixon chose to take a sip from his glass, though he moderated his consumption.
