A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his pregnant partner, Janet Dweh, in Perth. Dweh, who was 36 and just weeks away from giving birth, was killed in October 2021 when Hassan Jabbie struck her over 30 times with a hammer in her home in Dayton.

Jabbie, who was married and did not want Dweh to go through with her pregnancy, has consistently denied committing the crime. However, he revealed chilling sentiments to an undercover officer posing as his cellmate after his arrest, expressing regret about meeting Dweh and describing her as “the bitch” when discussing the violent confrontation that led to her death. Jabbie claimed his intention was to persuade Dweh to have an abortion, and it was her refusal that escalated the situation to violence.

During the court proceedings, details of Jabbie’s traumatic childhood emerged; he fled Liberia as a child, witnessing his brother’s murder, which contributed to his struggle with PTSD. Despite this background, he displayed no emotion when the life sentence was pronounced, with an obligation to serve a minimum of 24 years before being eligible for parole.

Dweh’s family attended the sentencing, expressing relief at the justice served. Her brother Jeremiah described her as a loving, hardworking member of their community, emphasising her positive impact and the deep love felt for her.
