A police lieutenant in Las Vegas has provided his phone number to players for assistance if they encounter any difficulties, following an incident involving two Canberra Raiders players, Hudson Young and Morgan Smithies, who were involved in a late-night elevator altercation at their hotel. With the season opener just days away, both players were removed from the hotel after their inflatable baseball bat was misidentified as a weapon, and they now face disciplinary actions from the Raiders.
Raiders coach Ricky Stuart addressed the situation before Young and Smithies issued personal apologies. While police were not involved in the incident, Lieutenant Kendall Bell expressed familiarity with such situations from his own sports experience, suggesting that alcohol may have played a part in the altercation, which allegedly revolved around a room reservation.
Bell downplayed the seriousness of the event, indicating that inflatable bats are typically associated with drinks packages. He emphasised that the NRL’s safety protocols are in place to prevent off-field incidents from overshadowing the event, ensuring that player welfare and security are prioritised.
In a proactive approach to player safety, Bell mentioned his willingness to offer his contact information to players, encouraging them to call him for help with any issues, including recommendations for restaurants. He praised the NRL’s effort to prepare players for their time in Las Vegas, ensuring they have access to resources that promote safety and enjoyment.
The action in Las Vegas is scheduled to commence with a Super League match, followed by a game featuring the Jillaroos against England, culminating in two NRL matches headlined by the reigning premiers, Penrith, facing the Sharks.
