In a significant shift in American foreign policy, President Trump has sought to downgrade European influence, focusing on rapid resolutions to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In a recent virtual meeting with leaders from the G7 nations, Trump engaged over two hours in discussions related to the war, marking the three-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Throughout this period, Trump has made bold territorial demands, including aspirations for regions like Greenland, Canada, and even rare earth minerals from Ukraine. Just over a month into his second term, Trump is reshaping the traditional US diplomatic stance, which has historically been characterised by a commitment to global stability following World War II. Critics argue that his moves could undermine the foundational principles of international bodies like the United Nations.

Former US Ambassador Ian Kelly expressed his dismay, stating that decades of policies combating aggressors seem to be unraveling without thoughtful discourse. He voiced a preference for “peace through strength” over what he described as surrender. This sentiment resonates amid growing concerns that Trump’s approach dismisses established diplomatic norms and support for Ukraine amidst Russian aggression.

Nevertheless, progress is being made on agreements meant to strengthen economic ties between the US and Ukraine, a strategy seen as counter to Russian interests. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has voiced concerns over insufficient security guarantees linked to mineral deals offered by the US.

Additionally, the US faced a setback at the United Nations, where a proposal to end the war without directly addressing Russia’s actions was rejected. Instead, a European-backed resolution explicitly calling for Russia’s withdrawal from Ukraine was approved, reflecting diminished international support compared to earlier responses condemning Russian aggression.

As European leaders, such as French President Emmanuel Macron, visit Kyiv to reiterate support for Ukraine amidst these tensions, they are voicing concerns over Trump’s leniency towards Putin. Macron underscored the necessity for a unified front against Russian hostility to maintain both credibility and strength in international relations, particularly concerning the US’s competitive stance against China.

Amid these discussions, Trump has assured that he is negotiating with purpose, highlighting that Putin is motivated to reach a deal. Some diplomats caution that this approach may undermine the narrative surrounding the war, as many believe that acknowledging Russia’s role is essential for a genuine peace.

As top European officials converge in Kyiv to mark the war’s anniversary, the wider implications for global security and the commitment of US support remain hot topics, especially given the absence of high-level American participation at the commemorative events. The resolution of this conflict could reshape geopolitical dynamics, emphasising the significance of a strong response to breaches of international sovereignty.
