Maddison Levi, regarded as the world’s top rugby sevens player, is currently relishing a “well-earned break” following a rollercoaster 2024 season. The talented speedster played a pivotal role for the Australian team, scoring 14 tries and contributing significantly to their fourth-place finish at the Paris Olympics. However, her progress was halted by a fractured thumb sustained during the Perth Sevens tournament last month, forcing the 22-year-old to miss playing time.

Watching her teammates secure a commendable third place at the Vancouver Sevens without her was a “frustrating” experience. Levi expressed her disappointment at being sidelined, yet she remained a steadfast supporter, saying, “I watched every game… [it’s] probably more frustrating that I can’t do anything.” Additionally, with her sister Teagan also in the team, her nerves heightened as she took on the role of her sister’s “harshest critic.”

Despite her injury, Levi is choosing to focus on the positives. She acknowledged that this time off is an opportunity to refine her fitness and overall performance. “It’s a well-earned break that I wouldn’t normally give myself,” she admitted, while noting her eagerness to return to the pitch. This injury, albeit inconvenient, has only intensified her desire to play again, particularly after a challenging year.

Looking ahead, Levi anticipates a busy year with the chance to participate in both sevens and 15s rugby. She intends to compete with her sister and other players in the Super Rugby competition, while aiming for a spot in the Wallaroos squad for the Rugby World Cup. “We want to not only complement the girls who are already there, but also stamp what we know from sevens… it’s pretty exciting,” she stated, referring to the rarity of becoming a dual international in rugby.

Levi’s commitment remains strong as she balances her responsibilities in sevens and prepares for the demands of the upcoming season. She’s hopeful of making a significant impact in both formats of the sport and is ready to embrace the challenges that lie ahead. With her talent and determination, there’s no doubt she will continue to shine on the rugby field, striving to achieve both her personal and team goals.
