Commercial fishermen along the Gold Coast are increasingly alarmed by what they describe as a surge in the bull shark population, the highest in four decades. Luke Bradnam, an expert from 9News on beaches and fishing, highlights the significant financial ramifications as fishermen report losing catches due to these aggressive sharks.
In response to these challenges, Bradnam has advocated for the allowance of culling bull sharks exceeding 1.5 metres in length, believing that such measures could help mitigate the impact of sharks on commercial fishing operations. However, experts have urged caution, emphasising the need for concrete evidence before proceeding with any culling initiatives.
Marine biologist Dr Vincent Raoult notes that the rise in shark depredation—where sharks consume fish caught by anglers—does not necessarily indicate an overall increase in shark populations. The Department of Primary Industries has undertaken a two-year research project to explore viable strategies that balance the protection of marine ecosystems with the needs of sustainable fishing practices. The aim is to find solutions that both protect marine life and support the economic interests of the fishing community.
