Carlton’s hopes for a successful 2024 AFL season have taken a major blow with the revelation that their top draft pick, 19-year-old midfielder Jagga Smith, has sustained a season-ending ACL injury. The No. 3 pick in the upcoming draft suffered the injury during a practice match against St Kilda last Saturday while being tackled. Following surgery, Smith will commence his rehabilitation.
Carlton footy boss Brad Lloyd expressed deep sympathy for Smith, praising his strong work ethic and professionalism since joining the club. Despite the setback, Lloyd remains optimistic, noting that Smith will leverage the opportunity to learn from teammates and coaches while preparing for the next season.
Initially, assistant coach Tim Clarke downplayed the injury, believing it was minor after Smith sustained a knee knock. However, scans revealed the unfortunate extent of the damage. Smith showcased outstanding potential during his pre-season training, which had generated expectations for his debut in Round 1 against Richmond at the MCG on March 13.
Smith had an impressive performance history, averaging 33.8 disposals per game last season while playing for the Oakleigh Chargers. As he embarks on his path to recovery, Carlton’s focus remains on supporting the young talent during this challenging period.
