The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) recently declared 2024 to be the most financially prosperous year in the history of the NRL, which spans 117 years. At its annual general meeting, the ARLC reported a revenue surplus of $62.3 million, marking the fourth consecutive year of financial success, totalling $226.5 million over this period.

Net assets have grown to $322.4 million post-COVID, reflecting a 24 per cent increase from 2023. Overall revenue reached a record $744.9 million, up by $43.7 million. ARLC chairman Peter V’landys highlighted that with increased participation from diverse demographics, rugby league has solidified its status as Australia’s leading sport. This financial strength enables significant reinvestment into clubs, players, and grassroots initiatives.

The 2024 season saw viewership in Australia and New Zealand surpass 200 million for the first time, an increase of 8.6 per cent from the previous year, with NRL matches attracting 153.7 million viewers—outpacing the AFL. Attendance at games also reached a record high, with nearly 4.8 million fans.

V’landys expressed pride in the innovative growth strategies employed by the commission, while NRL CEO Andrew Abdo noted that these promising results will set a strong foundation for 2025’s future advancements.
