Derek Rucker believes that Australian basketball star Patty Mills could make a significant impact if he were to return to the NBL to conclude his career. At 36, Mills has spent the past two seasons as a bench player with various NBA teams, recently joining the Los Angeles Clippers. With no contract beyond the 2024-25 season, speculation is increasing about a potential return to Australia for Mills, who last played for the Melbourne Tigers during the 2011-12 season.
Rucker, a former MVP of the NBL, hasn’t dismissed the idea of Mills returning, noting the considerable benefits his presence could bring to a club, both on the court and in terms of commercial appeal. He cautioned, however, that Mills’ skills may begin to decline with age. Rucker mentioned that several NBL teams could potentially benefit from his involvement.
Additionally, Rucker also discussed teammate Joe Ingles, suggesting that a non-playing role would suit him better, where he could leverage his extensive network in the basketball community to enhance a club’s front office. Rucker compared this potential role to those taken by past players like Andrew Bogut, who have successfully transitioned into off-court roles, bringing valuable credibility and connections to their clubs.
