Interim Matildas coach Tom Sermanni has dismissed speculation regarding Sam Kerr’s future as captain, stating it’s “irrelevant” while she recovers from a long-term injury. Kerr recently faced legal scrutiny but was acquitted of racially aggravated harassment by a London jury. As she continues her recovery from an ACL injury sustained in January 2024, discussions about her leadership role have surfaced, particularly with the SheBelieves Cup commencing soon in the US.

Sermanni emphasised that the primary focus is on Kerr’s health and readiness to return to the field rather than captaincy issues. He noted that by the time Kerr rejoins the team, there may be a new coach, rendering the captaincy conversation premature. In the interim, Steph Catley has stepped in as captain and performed admirably.

When asked about his involvement in future captaincy discussions, Sermanni confirmed he would participate if still in his position. However, he reiterated that the focus remains on the team’s immediate preparations for the tournament, which begins with a match against Japan. He assured that the squad is in high spirits and any discussions about Kerr’s situation would occur naturally as the tournament progresses.
